The Spirit of Exploration

Ghostveil Team Jacket

I've always been fascinated by the visual language of exploration. The early polar expeditions, with their oversized national flags sewn onto heavy parkas, specialized equipment, and the promise of adventure in some faraway place.

As a kid growing up in the 1970s, much of that fascination was sparked by the GI Joe Adventure Team. They brought that world of exploration into my childhood.

Those guys weren't necessarily going to war. But they were definitely going somewhere dangerous. Exploring the Arctic, recovering lost artifacts, retrieving downed satellites. They were mission-focused and outfitted to match.

The recently released VIKTOS Ghostveil Team jacket draws directly from that same visual vocabulary. The Atlantic blue shell, oversized American flag, and expedition-inspired graphics aren't accidental. They're a nod to an earlier era of exploration.

But while the visual inspiration came from childhood, the functional requirements came from decades of traveling the world.

For years, my constant companion was an old waxed-cotton Filson anorak. Honest construction, wonderfully versatile... and on occasion, waterproof.

But I needed a modern replacement. Something that could handle light chop fishing in the North Sea, paragliding in Vietnam, skiing in the French Alps, or an unexpected hailstorm while riding a Dyna through the Black Hills.

The solution was a lightweight, packable 2.5-layer waterproof/breathable shell. Technical enough to perform in miserable weather, casual enough to wear to inclement happy hours, and compact enough to live in my carry-on.

Because the best piece of adventure equipment isn't the most specialized. It's the one you have with you.
